Arna is a dedicated and encouraging teacher with a comprehensive teaching method. In the time that I’ve learned from her, my technique and musicality have vastly improved and I’ve achieved some really great results!
[note from Arna] Chloe achieved an outstanding 143/150 for her 2022 Grade 8 Violin exam - congrats Chloe!

If you’re doing the wrong thing, no amount of repetition will make it right.
I took up the horn as a mature student. I entertained no fantasies about becoming a professional, but if something’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well. I got off to a good start, and was soon able to play in my community orchestra, but my progress stalled and I became discouraged. Last year I swallowed my pride, made some enquires, and contacted Alex Morton. Well done, me!
Alex is a passionate horn player, obviously, but he’s also keenly interested in how people learn. He enjoys teaching. He’s shown me a whole new way to think about what I’m doing, and it’s an adventure. Among other things, those big problems are just small problems layered on top of each other. Changing old habits can be hard work, but when you get the right habit, the task is much easier. (It’s so unfair - the worst player might actually be working harder to achieve less than the best player).
I’d recommend Alex if you’re an experienced player stuck on something specific, or if you’re a beginner, or if you’re seriously ambitious.

In my third and final year of a BMus in horn performance, Alex Morton joined the university’s teaching faculty [University of Canterbury] and, thankfully, took me on as an older student.
Although I’ve had a lifelong love of playing the horn in community groups on and off over the past 55 years, I had not done any serious study on the horn until I left full-time work and returned to university. Studying with Alex, I made more progress than I had ever made before.
Alex is a beautiful horn player and an excellent teacher. He is well-organised and systematic and has a wealth of technical expertise and musicality to share. I appreciated both his analytical approach and his willingness to demonstrate on the horn. Alex is a process-driven teacher with a strong emphasis on fundamentals. I came away from this year not only with improved confidence, range, and technical skills but also now have a set of methods to support continued improvement.
Alex has a real passion for the horn and I feel grateful and privileged that he so willingly and kindly shared that with me.
